Navigating iOS and iPadOS

As mentioned earlier iOS and iPadOS are the software designed for iPhone and iPad. Operating systems are an important part of a device as it controls how the user interacts with it. Although there are differences between iOS (operating system in iPhone) and iPadOS (operating system in an iPad), they do have some similar functionalities. During this lesson we are going to show you some features of iOS and iPadOS that you may not know about. These include: taking screenshots, quick access to your camera, turning on and off Wi-Fi, and switching between apps.

You can see we are going to be learning quite a bit in this lesson. These are not necessarily things you will use every day, but they can come in handy. Let’s check them out together.

Note: Depending on which model of iPhone and iPad you use, these tasks will be completed differently which is why you will see demonstrations with both an iPad with a home button and an iPad without one. The iPhone used in the demonstrations does not have a home button, but if your iPhone has one follow the same steps as the iPad with a home button as they do work the same.

How to take a Screenshot

In our previous lesson on using a Magic Keyboard, we discussed how to take a screenshot on a Mac. We explained that taking a screenshot means to take a photo of your entire screen. This can also be done on with iOS and iPadOS. Below are short videos on how to take a screenshot on an iPad and an iPhone.

iPad- With Home Button

Step 1: Press the home button and the power button at the same. You will see a photo of the screen taken and it will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen. To view it, tap on the photo. It will also automatically save in your Photos app.

iPad- No Home Button

Step 1: If your iPad does not have a home button, to take a screenshot press the power button and the volume up button at the same time. Your screenshot will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen and will automatically be saved to your Photos app.

iPhone

Step 1: If your iPhone does not have a home button, to take a screenshot press the power button and the volume up button at the same time. Your screenshot will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen and will automatically be saved to your Photos app.

Note: if your iPhone has a home button follow the same steps as the iPad with a home button.

Screenshots can be super convenient, and the great thing is that they automatically save to your Photos app. And speaking of taking photos, let’s now take a look at how you can quickly access the camera on your iPad or iPhone right from your lock screen.

How to access your Camera from your Lock Screen

Have you ever been using your iPad or iPhone and see something that you want to take a photo off quickly? But by the time you unlock your device, find the camera app and then open it, it’s too late and now you can’t take the photo? Well, luckily this can be prevented because with iOS and iPadOS you can quickly open up your camera app without unlocking your device. Below are short videos on how to access the camera app from your lock screen.

Note: if you would like to learn the basics of using your camera app and photos app, check out our lessons in the Get to know your iPad and Using your iPhone Courses.

Step 1: From your lock screen, swipe your finger to the left. Your camera app will open and you can start taking photos and videos.

Pretty simple, right? We have a few more cool tricks to show you! Let’s look at how to turn on and off Wi-Fi.

Turn on and off Wi-Fi

In the course Get to know your iPad we discuss how to connect to a Wi-Fi network. In this lesson we want to show you how to turn on and off Wi-Fi easily so that if you ever want to turn off Wi-Fi to save your battery or if you want to disconnect from a network without having to go into your Settings app. Watch the short video below to see how to turn on and off Wi-Fi.

iPhone

Step 1: For both iPad and iPhone, to turn on and off Wi-Fi from the top right corner of the screen drag your finger towards the center of the screen. Your control center will appear on the screen with a bunch of different buttons. Find the Wi-Fi icon which looks like an upside down triangle and tap on it. When the icon is grey Wi-Fi is turned off, when the icon is blue Wi-Fi is turned on.

How to switch between Apps

When you are using apps on your iPhone or iPad and you want to switch between them, the common way you can do this is to go back to your home screen and find the app you want to open. With iOS and iPadOS there is an easier way. Below are short videos demonstrating how to quickly switch between apps on an iPad and iPhone.

iPad- With a Home Button

Step 1: Press your home button two times quickly. You will see all the apps you have open appear on the screen. Choose the app you would like to go to and tap on it. The app will then open full screen on your iPad.

iPad- No Home Button

Step 1: If your iPad does not have a physical home button, from the bottom of your iPad use your finger to swipe upwards. The apps that you have open will appear across the screen. Tap on the app you would like to open and it will open full screen on your iPad.

iPhone

Step 1: If your iPhone does not have a physical home button, from the bottom of your iPhone use your finger to swipe upwards. The apps that you have open will appear across the screen. Tap on the app you would like to open and it will open full screen on your iPhone.

Note: if your iPhone has a home button follow the same steps as the iPad with a home button.

You are going to be a pro with your device in no time. Now let’s move on to our last lesson where we will learn how to reset your iPad and iPhone. See you over there!
